Strength Training
Strength training is not just about lifting weights. To become stronger, we need to work our muscles against resistance, and that resistance can take many forms: free-weights, body weight, resistance bands, gravity. Exercises can focus on a single muscle or employ functional movement patterns that place demands on several muscles at the same time.
As a form of exercise, strength training becomes more important as we age. For women, it goes far beyond building muscle and increasing strength. It plays a vital role in maintaining bone density, boosting metabolism, managing body composition, improving mental well-being and supporting brain health.
What’s more strength training is empowering, confidence-building and mood-enhancing, and incorporating it into your fitness routine is a powerful step towards achieving optimal wellness.
Interval Training
Cardiovascular fitness is paramount if we want to remain active and adventurous as we age. Peak aerobic capacity (our ability to maximally use oxygen in the performance of physically demanding tasks) is a strong indicator of what we can and can’t expect to be able to do, now and in the future. Pushing that peak as high as possible today will enable us to enjoy the independence that comes with physical ability for years to come. This takes training, interval training.
The good news is the type of exercise that rewards us with greater physical capabilities, showers us with a multitude of other life-enhancing benefits too:
- improved body composition and reduction in the build-up of visceral (belly) fat
- reduction in the risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes and the prevalence of chronic inflammation
- a boost to the immune system
- supportive in the muscle-building process
- beneficial to vascular, brain and bone health
- …and a wonderful stress-management tool to boot!
Mobility, Stability and a Strong Core
With good stability we can move purposefully and powerfully, with greater ease and a lower risk of injury. With good mobility we can respond quickly and easily to catch ourselves and restore balance. In other words, mobility and stability are two sides of the same coin and at their foundation is a strong core.
